Defined as: the impetus and driving force gained by the development of a process or course of events.
Momentum is a beautiful thing. You may also call it the compound effect, the domino effect or the snowball effect. When you have it, you can feel it. It’s exciting. When you have lost it, well you can feel that too.
I am a big thinker and a dreamer. I start with the big picture and well the details are important I know, however I have always loved thinking about the end goal. Can you relate?
When momentum is in play, you can start with something that’s so tiny, or with just one thing and it can grow and amplify and because of the physics of momentum and the compounding force, once you have it, it can take down something double it’s size.
The Art of Getting Started
To build momentum and stay motivated, you must understand the art of starting small.
Think about when you turn onto the highway in a car. You put your foot to the floor. Does it shoot off like a rocket at 100km/hr straight away? No. It builds up to that speed. The engine gets going, the wheels turn faster and before you know it you are cruising along.
When building momentum in your life, staying focused and committed to the forward movement is key. Start small and grow consistently.
So what does that mean for you?
By starting with the smallest piece, and putting in consistent effort, eventually you will be able to take down something 10 feet tall, and then when you keep compounding from that place, you can take down something beyond your wildest imagination.
We all have that BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) out there in the distance, whether that be a family goal, relationship, career, or health goal – we have these visions of what we want to accomplish in our life and sometimes they just feel out of reach.
You focus on your BHAG and make that your target.
You commit yourself to the process. Then you start with the smallest step. And then you take the next one and the next one and the next one. With each step you take you put your everything into. As much energy, gumption, and effort you’ve got so that each step leads you to the next.
This is how I have created my business over the past 2.5 years. With every step, you make progress and that progress is amplified, so the size of the results increase, and you start compounding with that momentum.
Before you know it, BOOM – you’re half way there! Then you can take a look back and see what you have been able to accomplish, while you give yourself a massive pat on the back.
And then one morning you wake up and realise that you have taken down your BHAG! All you have done is allow the force of momentum from these small seemingly unimportant steps to build on each other so you can achieve your goals and dreams!
